a landscape-first approach for this shopping mall redevelopment project to support economic growth, social cohesion, and ecological resiliency
How does one transform a 50-year-old suburban shopping mall, with its vast parking lot, into a dynamic and vibrant community connected to neighbourhoods, transit and nature? A recent article in Green Building and Design magazine features SvN Partner Shonda Wang discussing the challenges and processes behind priming a car-dominant 53-acre site into a walkable community. Wang explains a revitalization process that will see the eventual creation of a resilient landscape design intent on peeling away the existing asphalt parking lot to reveal the existing watersheds that flow underneath. SvN Architects + Planners, design partners BDP Quadrangle and client RioCan Real Estate Investment Trust are developing a landscape-first approach for this shopping mall redevelopment project to support economic growth, social cohesion, and ecological resiliency.
