Join us for Doors Open Toronto
Once again, we will be participating in the Doors Open Toronto Open Studio program. See you on Saturday, May 25, 2024!
Pass by our Toronto studio in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood housed in one of four original LCBO warehouses constructed at the end of Prohibition. Meet our passionate team of planners, architects, urban designers, landscape architects, and interior designers who are shaping the future of our built environment. We have some exciting talks and programming throughout the day, and you'll get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our projects from sustainable housing solutions to vibrant urban spaces, with a focus this year on Inclusive Communities.
Talks
Housing the Unhoused
11am — Principal and Director of Regenerative Practice Aaron Budd will showcase Cabin Communities: our regenerative solution to our city’s ongoing homeless crisis. This ambitious pilot program that brings SvN together with nonprofit Two Steps Home and home builders CABN to supply transitional and temporary housing solution designed to be low-cost, rapidly built, and deployed on vacant lots. Optimized for efficiency and durability, they are the first step towards safe, stable, long-term housing options, including modular, supportive or rent-geared-to-income (RGI) options.
You will also have the opportunity to see a fully realized cabin on site during Doors Open. (more information below)
Living Streets: Creating Places to Help Our City Thrive
3pm — Senior Associate Dennis Rijkhoff will lead a talk on Living Streets and the future of urban design. When we think about urban public space, we typically imagine parks, plazas or greenways. But by size, a city's most significant category of public space is actually its streets, meaning that they contain the potential to truly define a city’s identity and to forge relationships between our many citizens, businesses, and cultures. We will showcase the potential to use these as a platform for action, as an incredible asset that can be used to improve our City. The design of place-based streets can allow us to address deeper social engagement within and across communities, build climate resilience and improving our public health.
