A public housing tower gets a daycare and a new lease
In The Globe and Mail article published on June 22, 2021, architecture critic Alex Bozikovic reviews SvN's Lawrence-Orton Community Centre and Daycare Facility in east Scarborough, discussing the significance of architecture as an elevating force for community pride among its residents.
In the article, Bozikovic reviews the economic, technical and logistical challenges of inserting a brand new daycare facility for 54 children into a revamped mid-century apartment building operated by Toronto Community Housing.
Establishing a new facility over an existing underground garage and onto an existing 50-year-old apartment tower added to the series of challenges. But the results speak for themselves where this brand new building has enabled new opportunities for residents--and especially the children--to have a bright and uplifting space to call their own.
